9 Day Masai Mara to Serengeti Fly-In Safari Itinerary

Your adventure begins not on a dusty road, but at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

You will board a light aircraft for a spectacular 45-minute flight over the Great Rift Valley. From your window, you will watch the urban sprawl fade into vast, rolling emerald hills. You will land at a bush airstrip in the heart of the Masai Mara, where your private safari vehicle will be waiting to whisk you away to your lodge for a gourmet lunch.

In the afternoon, you will head out for your first game drive. Because you saved six hours by flying, you will be fresh and ready to explore.

You will quickly see why the Mara is the crown jewel of Kenyan wildlife; as the heat of the day fades, you will search for lions and watch massive herds of elephants

For the next two days, the Mara is yours to explore. Your guide will take you deep into the reserve toward the Mara River, where you can observe hippos grunting in the pools and scan the riverbanks for elusive leopards.

Whether you are witnessing the Great Migration (July–October) or tracking a cheetah across the golden plains, these days are about the slow, patient art of the safari.

You will also have the optional opportunity to visit a local Maasai Boma to learn about the traditions of the people who have coexisted with these predators for centuries.

Today is where the “Fly-In” magic happens. Instead of a grueling day-long drive to the border, you will board your aircraft for a scenic flight to the border (Migori/Tarime).

After a quick, guided customs clearance, you will hop back into the air and land directly in the Serengeti National Park.

While other travelers are still bouncing in jeeps on rough roads, you will already be at your Serengeti camp, enjoying a cold drink and an afternoon game drive in the Seronera Valley.

You will spend two full days immersed in the world’s most famous wildlife sanctuary. Without the need to move camps, you can venture far into the plains to follow the movements of the herds.

You will explore the famous Kopjes—the massive granite boulders that rise out of the grass like islands where lion prides love to sunbathe and scan for prey.

Your guide will track the “Big Cats” through the acacia woodlands, and you will experience the sheer scale of an ecosystem that feels truly infinite. This is the perfect time for an optional Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Safari to see the Serengeti wake up from above.

You will enjoy one last morning game drive in the Serengeti, making the most of the “golden hour” when the light is perfect for photography. After a picnic lunch, you will begin a scenic drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

As the plains fall away behind you, you will climb into the lush, green highlands. You will arrive at your lodge perched on the Crater Rim in the late afternoon.

You will stand at the viewpoint and look down into the 600-meter-deep caldera a sight so breathtaking it feels like stepping back into a prehistoric era.

You will start your morning early as the mist still clings to the crater rim, descending 600 meters down the steep, forested walls into a landscape that feels like a prehistoric sanctuary.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained paradise, a 20km-wide caldera teeming with over 25,000 large animals. Because the walls act as a natural enclosure, you will find a density of wildlife here that is simply unmatched anywhere else in Africa.

You will spend your day navigating the diverse habitats of the crater floor, from the yellow-fever tree forests to the shimmering alkaline shores of Lake Magadi, where thousands of flamingos create a pink haze.

You will keep a sharp eye on the tall grass, as this is your absolute best chance to spot the endangered Black Rhino. After a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, you will continue your exploration, perhaps watching a pride of lions lounging in the shade of your vehicle.

In the late afternoon, you will ascend back to the rim and return to the comfort of the same lodge. You will have the evening to relax by the fire, share your photos, and enjoy a final night overlooking the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”

After a relaxed breakfast and a final look at the breathtaking views from the crater rim, you will begin your journey home. You will be transferred to the Manyara Airstrip or Arusha Airport, driving through the colorful, lush coffee plantations of the highlands. You will board your final flight back to Nairobi, a scenic journey that takes you back over the dramatic landscapes of the Rift Valley.
