Pemba Island

A Cultural Jewel of Zanzibar

Pemba is a lush, hilly island in the Zanzibar Archipelago, located about 50 kilometers north of Unguja. Known for its fertile soil and tropical climate, Pemba is distinguished by its greenery and rich biodiversity. Historically, it was a significant trade hub, attracting merchants from Persia, Arabia, and India, which influenced its predominantly Islamic culture and Swahili language.

The economy centers on agriculture, especially clove plantations, fishing, and a growing tourism sector attracted by pristine beaches and vibrant marine life. The island’s natural beauty is complemented by endemic species like the Pemba Flying Fox and diverse coral reefs.

Infrastructure is less developed than in Zanzibar Island, with Chake Chake being the main town. Pemba is accessible via air and ferry. Despite facing challenges such as limited infrastructure and poverty, ongoing development efforts aim to improve living conditions and economic opportunities for its residents.
